Regularly backing up your website is one of the most important things you can do to guard against losing all your data. After all, you’ve spent hours and hours building it, and no one plans to be hacked or for their server to crash.

Fortunately, there are plenty of great WordPress plugins available that will back up your complete site. This WordPress Wednesday I will share six best backup plugins for WordPress some are free, and some you will need to spend some money for them.

One last thing before I start, many hosting providers offer limited backup services for your WordPress site, but I will always recommend not just rely solely on them no matter what they say as it’s your responsibility to keep regular backups of your website.

1. UpdraftPlus

One of my personal favourite to use, UpdraftPlus is one of the popular free WordPress backup plugin available, there’s is more than 2 million websites actively using this plugin as UpdraftPlus simplifies backups and restoration as you can back up your files and database backups into the cloud and restore with a single click.

You can send your backups directly to Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3 (or compatible), UpdraftVault, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, DreamObjects, Openstack Swift, and email, you can schedules every 4, 8 or 12 hours, daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, if you have that small accident you can restore backups directly from the WordPress control panel.

There is a premium version which also backs up to Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, SFTP, SCP, and WebDAV. Also with the paid version you can migrate or clone your site, backup WordPress multisite or networks securely and more features in the premium version.

2. BackWPup

The backup plugin BackWPup can be used to save your complete installation including /wp-content/ and push them to an external Backup Service, like Dropbox, S3, FTP and many more. This plugin uses a single backup .zip file which you are able to easily restore an installation.

It is notably easy to use and allows you to schedule automatic backups according to your site update frequency.

As like UpdraftPlus there is an premium version of BackWPup that comes with priority support, ability to store backups on Google Drive, encrypt backup archives and some other excellent features.

3. BoldGrid Backup

BoldGrid Backup is a WordPress backup solution by BoldGrid, and it allows you to easily create your site backups and restore it after if indeed it crashes, and you can even use it to move your site when you switch hosting providers. Also, you can set up automated backups or manually create backups with one-click.

It comes with an automated fault protection feature which automatically creates a backup of your site before it updates so if an update fails, it automatically rolls back your WordPress site to the last backup.

With BoldGrid Backup, you can store up to ten backup archives on your dashboard and more in a remote storage location like Amazon S3, FTP or SFTP.

4. BackupBuddy

BackupBuddy is one of the most known premium backup plugins since launching in 2010 it been used by over half a million WordPress sites. BackupBuddy allows you to easily schedule daily, weekly and monthly backups.

You can automatically store your backups in cloud storage services like Dropbox, Amazon S3, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, Stash which is their cloud service and even email it. BackupBuddy is that it is not a subscription-based service, so there is no monthly fee. You can use the plugin on the number of websites mentioned in your plan.

With the one off fee you get access to premium support forums, regular updates, and 1GB of BackupBuddy Stash storage to store your backups. In addition, their iThemes Sync feature lets you manage up to 10 WordPress site from a single dashboard. Like other plugins you can even use BackupBuddy to duplicate, migrate and restore websites.

You are a click away from restoring, and you can encrypt your DB backups to add an extra layer of security and makes your backup GDPR compatible.

Like other plugins on this list, you can now use a backup to clone or migrate your site to a new location at ease, and lastly it can also take screenshots before an update and compare it with the screenshots taken after the update and will send you an email if there are any visible changes on the site.

BlogVault is the last on today’s list, and this service is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution rather than a WordPress plugin. BlogVault creates offsite backups independently on BlogVault servers, so there will be a zero load on your server.
